About the Foundation
It has been estimated that 50% of South African women will be raped in their lifetime, and that a rape or sexual assault occurs in our country every 29 seconds. The official SAPS website states that in 2021, there were just under 40,000 cases of rape reported – keeping in mind that on average, only 1 in 9 rapes are actually reported.
Over 45% of rape cases reported to the police are children under the age of 12 and 44% of all these child cases reported are detected accidentally because of changes in behaviour, emotions and observed injuries.
Femicide in South Africa is 5x the global average rate and there has sadly been a 400% increase in sexual violence against children over the past decade.
The Jes Foord Foundation supports survivors of rape, molestation and sexual assault by providing compassionate support and trauma counselling to help them along their healing journey. Our work, however, goes beyond supporting victims. We strive to address the problem itself – the prevalence of rape in our society. We therefore also inform, create awareness and change attitudes through our advocacy and education programs.
Established in 2008, after founder Jessica Foord was gang-raped by 5 men, she decided to turn a horrific situation into a beacon of hope. The Jes Foord Foundation is a non-profit, PBO (Public Benefit Organisation) and relies solely on individual and corporate donations to keep our support and advocacy initiatives running. Furthermore, as a registered, B-BBEE compliant PBO, The Foundation is able to issue Section 18A Tax Certificates to all donors.
