Nurturing Your Heart

It’s September and that means Spring is here! September is also Heart Awareness Month and is a great reminder for us to take care of one of our most vital organs, our Heart! Did you know that heart disease is caused by long term low grade inflammation of the arterial walls? Processed, junk foods and unhealthy lifestyle habits can cause and make this inflammation worse, but there is a lot that we can do to reduce that inflammation and also our risk of cardiovascular disease.

Let’s look at some of the ways that we can reduce our risk:

ZA Town - Health for Happiness 1

Healthy Eating

Fuel your body with whole foods, balanced and nutrient dense diet. Limit your intake of junk, processed and sugary foods.

Regular Movement

Just as Spring breathes life into the world, regular physical activity breathes vitality into your heart. Exercise improves circulation, strengthens your heart muscle and keeps your arteries flexible. It’s important to choose an activity that you enjoy.

Good Quality Sleep

During sleep, your heart rate and blood pressure lower, giving your heart much-needed rest. Aim for between 7-9 hours of good quality sleep each night.

Stress Management

Stress is inevitable and a little bit of stress is good, but it is the prolonged stress that is damaging to your heart health. Incorporate stress-reduction techniques into your daily routine like meditation, breathing exercises or going for walks – again do what works for you.

Laughter

Mindful Living

Make time for hobbies, laughter and connections with friends and loved ones. A happy heart is a healthy heart.

These are just a few things that you can do to nurture your heart and by making small, consistent changes to your lifestyle, you can significantly reduce your risk of heart-related issued.
