I am Jeanie Nel, the owner and founder of HATZ BY JEANIE, a millinery business where I create unique and stylish hats. What started as a lucrative hobby transformed into a full-time business in 2013 when I left my position as a dental nurse and registered my company. Just two years into my journey, I won an award for my work, and since then, I have received many more recognitions.
My motivation for starting my own business was to gain the freedom to work for myself and to have control over my working hours. This flexibility allows me to be available to assist my twin grandchildren with their schooling; I have been homeschooling them since 2017.

I design and handcraft bespoke and couture headwear, ensuring high quality that matches my clients’ outfits and personalities for special occasions like weddings, beauty pageants, church events, fashion shows, horse racing, and theater productions. My hats exemplify top quality and are a true brand of excellence, made with the finest materials and craftsmanship. My clientele ranges from mothers of the bride and groom to speakers at events, wedding guests, and even celebrities.
Empowering Women
Another important aspect of my business is empowering other women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. I achieve this by offering courses across South Africa, where I teach my skills to aspiring milliners. Many of my students have gone on to open their own hat boutiques. The courses are only three days long, after which students can start their own businesses, whether full-time or as a supplementary income. I maintain a WhatsApp support group for my students, providing ongoing advice to ensure that they grasp every concept and technique I teach. Additionally, I offer master classes to further empower them. I have such confidence in my students’ abilities that I often refer clients to them when I am too busy to take on more work.
