Woman Of Worth – WHAM Workspace

WAHM Workspace – Bianca Johnson & Adrienne Brown

Bianca Johnson launched WAHM WorkSpace in September 2017. Her second child, a daughter, was just 3 months old when she launched the business. Initially the idea was to create a physical coworking space in Durban, specifically targeted at supporting work at home moms (WAHMs), whether through office space, retail space or meeting options. However, after some research, she realised that the coworking spaces already in Durban were underutilized and changed her focus.

WAHM WorkSpace launched into Virtual Assistance services and Bianca put out a call on a Whatsapp group asking if there were other moms looking to supplement their income. Bianca had 27 responses in 48 hours. Adrienne Brown was one of those moms and joined the WAHM team almost from the beginning. Since January 2018, WAHM WorkSpace has empowered more than 20 work at home moms as VAs in the business. Many of whom have gone on to run their own businesses or follow other passions with a renewed sense of purpose.

Doubling down and quadrupling the business

In the seven years when she started the business Bianca has dealt with numerous health issues for herself and her daughter. She’s run the business from a hospital bed on more than one occasion. In 2020, when the world fell apart, WAHM WorkSpace doubled down and quadrupled their business. As the company grew, it was able to keep eight families afloat through the chaos caused by numerous lockdowns in South Africa.

Reaching the One Million mark

In 2021, Adrienne joined Bianca as a director of the company, and the business expanded and grew even more – sustainably bringing in our first million Rand in revenue. Splitting the company in 2023 to WAHM Training and WAHM Tech & Finance Support has meant that Bianca can focus on her passion for empowering others and sharing her knowledge in a brand that speaks to her focus, and Adrienne can highlight her decades of experience in the Financial Support arena by supporting small businesses to know their numbers.

Through many ups and downs, this business has supported work at home moms – both internally and as clients – to feel empowered and valued for the role they play in the world.

Balancing the complicated requirements of running a business and raising a family has been one of our key successes.
